X (Twitter) Image Size Quick Reference

In-Stream Photo Dimensions

X displays in-stream photos at a maximum width of 1600 pixels. The recommended size is 1600 x 900 pixels (16:9), which fills the tweet card with no cropping on desktop and mobile. X supports portrait, square, and landscape orientations.

For portrait images, use 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5) to maximize vertical space in the feed. For square images, 1080 x 1080 pixels is the standard. X will crop images that fall outside the supported aspect ratio range (from 2:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait) when displayed in the feed.

Profile Picture Size

X profile pictures display as circles across the platform. Upload a square image at 400 x 400 pixels for the sharpest result. X displays profile pictures at various sizes depending on context -- 48 x 48 pixels next to tweets, 200 x 200 pixels on the profile page -- so starting at 400 x 400 ensures quality at all sizes.

Supported formats are JPG, PNG, and GIF (non-animated). Keep file size under 2 MB. Because the image is cropped to a circle, place the main subject in the center and away from corners.

Header / Banner Image Size

The X profile header (banner) image displays at 1500 x 500 pixels with a 3:1 aspect ratio. The top and bottom edges of the header are partially covered by the profile picture and account details on mobile, so keep important content in the center third of the image.

Supported formats are JPG, PNG, and GIF (non-animated). The maximum file size is 5 MB. Headers are not cropped to a circle, so the full rectangular image is visible on desktop.

X (Twitter) Card Image Sizes

When you share a URL on X, the platform fetches Open Graph or Twitter Card meta tags to generate a link preview. The Summary Card with Large Image format uses a 1200 x 628 pixel image (1.91:1 ratio) and provides the most prominent preview. The standard Summary Card uses 800 x 418 pixels at the same ratio.

To control how your links appear on X, add the appropriate Twitter Card meta tags to your webpage. Without these tags, X may display a small thumbnail or no image at all.

Supported Image Formats on X

X supports JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP image formats for in-stream photos. JPEG is best for photographs, while PNG is better for images with text, logos, or sharp edges that benefit from lossless compression. Animated GIFs are supported but are converted to MP4 video by X for playback.

The maximum file size for photos is 5 MB. Animated GIFs have a higher limit of 15 MB.

Multi-Image Tweet Layout

X allows up to 4 images per tweet. When you attach multiple images, X arranges them in a grid layout in the feed. Two images appear side by side; three images show one large image on the left and two stacked on the right; four images appear in a 2x2 grid. All images are cropped to fit these grid positions.

For best results in multi-image tweets, use square images (1080 x 1080 pixels) so the grid crop removes as little of the image as possible.
